LegsSummer shoes have started to go on sale, so now is the time to buy the latest trends without paying top dollar.  Shoes with colour-blocks are big this year–highlighting the trend toward colour and contrast.  Whatever style you choose, consider the health of your feet.  Footwear that is too tight or too big can cause blisters to occur—a painful reminder that you didn’t focus on fit during the selection process.

Friction between the foot and your favorite shoe gear is the primary cause of these sore spots.  Filled with liquid, blisters can be very painful, but they are also quite common.  If you experience one, the best thing to do is to leave it alone.  However, there are times when the pain requires you to pop the skin that is raised and drain the fluid.  A sterilized sharp object should be used followed by an antibiotic ointment.  Bandage the area to prevent infection.  People with diabetes should not try to do this at home.  Infections can get out of control quickly due to the complications of the diabetic foot.

Summer footwear can be especially difficult since many sandals are made with a strap between the big toe and the second toe.  Depending on the material and construction of the shoe, you may find that a blister develops in that area.  This is just  one reason that flip-flops are not the best choice for healthy feet.

It’s easier to prevent a blister than it is to recover from one.  Choose shoes that fit well, and allow for a breaking-in period before you wear your new summer footwear for long periods.  If there are any signs of infection, seek treatment from Chiropodist Tony Abbott immediately.  At Abbott Foot & Ankle Clinic in Collingwood, ON, we understand the impact that foot pain can have on your life.  Call (705) 444-9929 to schedule an appointment today, or request on online.
