Ankle InjuryEarlier this year, Kelly Osbourne tweeted that she had sprained her ankle to avoid an unpleasant experience in a public toilet. A picture of her immobilized foot was released with no mention of the type of treatment she received, however, manual therapy could have decreased her recovery time. The celebrity has had a series of foot health issues after participating in Dancing with the Stars.

You don’t have to be a celebrity to experience this kind of foot injury, or to benefit from this hands-on therapy. Ankle sprains are one of the most common and frustrating ankle problems. Activity is limited and lifestyle adjustments have to be made, plus the treatment plan includes a lot of resting and waiting. Icing, reduction in activity, and immobilization are common. A home exercise plan may also be included.

Manual therapy, hands-on movement of the ankle and its joints by a trained professional, offers a way to a speedier and more complete recovery. This treatment along with guided exercise has proven to be the best way to fully address the long-term effects of an ankle sprain. The July 2013 issue of the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy highlighted its benefits, and the fact that traditional treatment often leaves patients with ongoing problems even though the immediate symptoms are addressed. In contrast, relief of pain and better ankle function were seen in those participants who received manual therapy.
