Never run with your mouth open! Recently I was approaching the end of one of my longer trail runs. My tongue must have been hanging out like a landing strip for a GIANT bug. It looked like the size of a 747 airplane and I saw it coming right at me almost in slow motion but I could not do anything about it. Before I knew it, I had swallowed that over sized bug. A few attempts to cough it up proved futile. I continued to run on, half expecting this bug to somehow find its way back out. But it didn’t! Needless to say, I am very conscious of breathing through my mouth since that awful episode.

There are some things that you should always do when trail running. Bring plenty of fluids (water and your favourite electrolyte drink) and some form of nourishment like the gel packs or energy bars that are so common nowadays. If you are running by yourself, always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back. Carry a cell phone in case you get lost or injured. It can be a long walk to your car if you sprain your ankle or twist a knee.

Running on the many trails in Collingwood, both in town and up on Blue Mountain, is great way to escape from our hectic lifestyles and get a workout in at the same time.

As a Collingwood based chiropodist (and runner myself), I am always available to discuss how you can minimize your chance of injury while participating in your sports of choice. Call Abbott Foot & Ankle Clinic at 705-444-9929 or visit us online to find out how we can help you.
