Feet by the WaterDespite appearances to the contrary—and Wiarton Willie and Gary the Groundhog’s predictions—spring is just around the corner, and summer won’t be far behind. Are your toenails ready? If they are yellow, dull, thick, or crumbly, you still have time to start laser treatment for fungal nails to pretty them up before sandal season hits.

Nail fungus, called onychomycosis, can affect anyone who is exposed to the dermatophyte fungus that is prevalent in damp, public places like pools and gyms. The fungi invade through tiny openings in your skin, like cuts or separation between the nail and nail bed. There they feed on the tissue and multiply and spread, especially during the winter when your feet are covered in socks and shoes more often—just the dark, warm places where these microorganisms thrive.

There are many conservative treatments, some more effective than others. We have had the best success with laser treatments, often in combination with other creams and sprays. The fungus lives under your nail, so oral medication used to be the most effective way to eliminate it, but it came with risks. Since laser therapy was discovered, the use of these concentrated light beams to vaporize the fungal cells without damaging surrounding tissue has become the treatment of choice. It is quick, painless, and has no serious side effects.

Depending on how extensive your infection is, you will need 1 to 4 (or more) treatments over time to eliminate your fungal infection. You need to make sure you treat your shoes with antifungal spray as well, so you don’t keep re-infecting your nails. The reason you want to start now—in the dead of winter—is that even though the fungus is eliminated, your healthy new nails will take some months to grow out.
