  1. Plantar Fasciitis. If your pain originates from the bottom of your heel and usually occurs after periods of inactivity, its cause may be plantar fasciitis. Usually, you will feel sharp pain with your first steps that slowly fades as you walk more. This pain occurs as the thick band of tissue that connects your heel to your toes becomes inflamed.
  2. Achilles Tendonitis. If your Achilles tendon is overused or injured, you may feel an ache above your heel. This usually happens after running or participating in sports. Many people experience Achilles Tendonitis if they suddenly increase the intensity of their activities.
  3. Bursitis. You have small fluid-filled sacs that cushion your bones, muscles, and tendons as they repeatedly move. If these sacs become inflamed, it can cause pain. Since your heel is constantly moving, it is a common area that experiences bursitis and the pain that comes with it.
  4. Rheumatoid Arthritis. This chronic inflammatory disorder can affect your heels as well as many other parts of your body. This is an autoimmune disorder, so your immune system is mistakenly attacking your own body. You may feel swollen joints that are warm and tender to touch.
